A message from Fire Chief Mark Sullivan

A message from Fire Chief Mark Sullivan:

I really hope everyone has a great 4th of July. Its a time of year to spend with family and friends celebrating one of  Americas greatest accomplishments. Take time to remind your kids what this holiday is about. The honor of displaying fireworks for this day came with a price for many men and women sacrificing for their children and future generations. Use this day and the firework display as a teaching tool with our younger generation. Share with them the lyrics of the star spangled banner, explain the meaning of being an American. Teach them we are ALL Americans and that we should always have each others good will close in mind, today and everyday. With these celebrations and gatherings comes great responsibility. Firework displays can be very dangerous. Please use responsibly and most of all, remain SAFE. Here are few really good firework safety tips:

Avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper. These fireworks are made for professional displays

Adult supervision during firework activities is very important, especially with sparklers which can burn to about 2000 degrees, hot enough to melt metal!

Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

Never light a firework in your hand, point or throw at another person.

Keep a bucket of water near by to douse used fireworks before discarding in the trash, and a garden hose handy in case of a small fire.

Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers

Never pickup fireworks that have not fully ignited or try to re-light.

Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device or device tube when lighting.

Only light one device at a time

Enjoy your Holiday! Be safe always!
