The Jones Administration Would Like To Update Everyone On The Status Of The Pool Project And The Recommendations Our Pool Experts Presented

17

The Jones Administration would like to update everyone on the status of the pool project and the recommendations our pool experts presented.   As many of you know under the Ron Arnold Administration, the City of Elwood did what they could to get the pool reopened, but many parts are now failing. As a result, a plan has been developed to turn the pool into a regional attraction.

Some of the key features of the new pool complex include:

Construction of a new 82 x 50 lap pool

Construction of a new zero-depth entry pool with slide

Existing Building Renovations and Improvements

Relocate and upgrade splash pad

The project will reuse components with significant life remaining. Marginal or worn-out components will be removed which represent most of the facility. The estimated cost of the new aquatics center project is $3,920,000, and it is anticipated to be funded through Tax Increment Financing Revenue in partnership with the Elwood Redevelopment Commission working alongside the Elwood Parks Department. Members of the Redevelopment Commission are Tom Austin, Tim Roby, Kyle Noone, Merrill Taylor, Jerry Dunnichay, and Bob Savage.

“I am very thankful for the commitment of the Redevelopment Commission, ERC Consultant Alan Moore, and Planning Director & Special Projects Advisor Bill Savage for all the planning and designing of this state-of-the-art aquatic center.  A project of this magnitude takes a great deal of time and consideration.  We were at a point where we could no longer put “Band-Aids” on all the existing issues at the pool.  There was no way to continue operating the pool efficiently and safely, which is why the decision was made to bring in experts and begin the process of creating a state-of-the-art aquatic center.  It was also very important that the burden of the cost not be placed on our residential taxpayers.  We are excited to be moving forward in bringing the Mary Beth Dunnichay Aquatic Center back to life for our residents and to help attract people from surrounding cities and towns to Elwood!  We appreciate your patience and understanding while we continue to work towards improving the quality of life in Elwood” stated Mayor Todd Jones
